Grandma's hairpins (Bobby Pins) look innocent, but they are actually a real revolution. Bobby pins got their name from the “bob” haircut, the short bob that spread around the world after the First World War; when hair became short, regular pins no longer held it, and that's why the new pins were invented.
Perhaps in our eyes they seem conservative, but back then, cutting your hair short and holding it in place was a bold, rebellious statement, one that symbolized women's independence and the breaking of all the old Victorian conventions
